Desde su origen en 1970, Queen ha crecido de forma exponencial en popularidad, sumando año tras años más fanáticos que se deleitan con los clásicos del rock universal, por lo que no es de extrañar que los homenajes a una banda que ha aportado tanto contenido en el mundo del arte se manifiesten de diversas maneras, en la actualidad, esa manera es una moneda.
En el diseño de la moneda se pueden ver los instrumentos de cada uno de los miembros históricos de la banda: el bajo de John Deacon, la batería de Roger Taylor, la Special II, característica guitarra de Bryan May y el infaltable piano de Freddy Mercury. Además, delimitando el centro de la moneda, se encuentra grabada la palabra «Queen», la que también está subrayada por un micrófono.
Nicola Howell, director comercial de la Casa de Moneda, afirmó mediante un comunicado que «Queen ha sido una de las bandas más influyentes de su generación, su música se ha convertido en un clásico y le sigue gustando a millones de personas alrededor del mundo. Es por esta razón que estamos tan felices de celebrar esta gran contribución para la música británica».
Brian May, guitarrista de la aclamada banda británica, comentó a Universal Records que la iniciativa es un verdadero honor, junto con agregar que «Es realmente un momento en el que piensas ‘¿quién podría haber imaginado tal cosa?’. Cuando empezamos, incluso el primer peldaño de la escalera de la fama parecía inalcanzable», palabras que reviven el recuerdo del gran éxito cinematográfico Bohemian Rhapshody y el gran camino recorrido de la banda antes de alcanzar el éxito.
Los precios de las monedas conmemorativas de colección y de edición limitada, van desde los 17 dólares (13 mil pesos chilenos) hasta los 2.620 dólares (cerca de los dos millones de pesos).
